MOSES LAKE, Wash. — The Moses Lake School District voted to move forward on changing its policies to ban transgender athletes from competing in girls sports.
On Thursday night, the board unanimously approved a letter to send to Governor Ferguson and State Superintended Chris Reykdal regarding transgender student athletes.
The letter states the Board’s plan to begin revising school policies to prohibit individuals assigned male at birth from participating in girls sports teams.
“The Moses Lake School Board of Education has resolved to revise our athletic eligibility policies effective immediately. We as a board do not believe we can achieve diversity or equity by infringing on students’ civil liberties,” the letter reads.
The school board confirmed it will now have to change and vote on the language of individual policies.
The move is in step with President Trump’s executive order signed in February.
The letter also cites concerns over the potential loss of federal funding, as President Trump threatened to withhold federal funding from any schools who do not comply with his executive order.
Despite Trump’s order, Superintendent Reykdal instructed school districts to continue allowing transgender athlete participation in girls sports, based on Washington state law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender.
