COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department is putting a $16 million bond on the upcoming May ballot, more than double the amount of the last bond passed in 2015.
The fire department has over $5.5 million set aside in the bond to remodel Station 2, which has become one of the busiest stations in the city.
“It really wasn’t designed for that kind of traffic,” said Deputy Fire Marshal Craig Etherton.
Station 2 firefighters routinely go out on over a thousand calls a year, but it is currently limited to one medical vehicle and one engine. The bond would allow the station to be rebuilt to include more rooms for firefighters and fire engines.
“We think that we can build a station that will offer us the space and the functionality that we need for years and years into the future,” Etherton said.
The bond would also set aside $10 million to replace older fire engines the department is still using.
If the new bond is approved, it would cost the owner of a $425,000 home just under $70 per year.
