SPOKANE, Wash. — A man accused of hitting a bicyclist without stopping made statements to police that he had been drinking prior to the incident.
According to a police affidavit of facts filed with the Spokane County Superior Court Monday, Jonathan Caballero hit a man riding his bike around 6:00 p.m. on North Division near Country Homes Boulevard.
The bicyclist became trapped under the vehicle, and began banging on the car and yelling at the driver to stop.
Eventually, the cyclist freed himself from the car and fell out into the road as the car drove away.
Police said the driver, Caballero, eventually pulled into a parking lot, but made no attempt to stop after hitting the cyclist.
The cyclist ended up with road rash on his left side and right knee, as well as injuries to his hand and ankle.
Police estimated the victim was dragged about 10 yards.
An officer noticed signs of impairment in Caballero, including exaggerated movements, bloodshot/watery eyes and slurred speech.
When asked if he had been drinking alcohol, an officer said Caballero responded by saying “of course I’ve been drinking.”
After a few failed attempts at field sobriety tests, Caballero agreed to breathalyzer test, and a sample registered with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.131%.
The legal BAC limit in Washington is 0.08%.
During a search, police said they found two marijuana cigarettes on Caballero’s person.
During Caballero’s first court appearance before Commissioner Eugene Cruz Tuesday, bond was set at $5,000. His next court appearance was scheduled for March 18 at 9:00 a.m.
