SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — The global rise of coffee bean prices is hitting local businesses hard.
Amanda LaShaw, owner of LaShaw Ranch Roasters in Rockford, Washington, said the price of certain coffee beans have risen more than 30% over the last few months.
A drought in Brazil affecting coffee bean crops is to blame. Brazil supplies a large amount of the world’s coffee beans.
LaShaw said, in the four years she’s been in business, she has never seen price increases like this.
She said with only five employees, it has been difficult to operate a small business, especially with the cost of packaging and labor also rising.
“We’re doing everything we can to keep it at a lower cost,” she said. ” We did about a 5% increase in our products, however, as we move forward, hopefully we don’t have to do that too much more, but we also have families to feed as well.”
