SPOKANE, Wash – A national tennis organization wants to increase participation in the sport by building a year-round tennis bubble at Shadle Park.
The organization is working with Spokane Parks and Recreation and Spokane Public Schools to build the facility as part of the Together Spokane plan unveiled last week.
USTA Pacific Northwest says it has worked with the city and Spokane Public Schools for years to increase tennis programs and access.
This plan would allow USTA to resurface existing courts at Shadle Park and enclose them in the bubble. USTA PNW says the facility could host PE classes, high school tennis matches and inclusive after school programs.
“We are incredibly excited to potentially partner with Spokane Public Schools and the City of Spokane to provide greater accessibility to year-round tennis play opportunities,” said Matthew Warren, USTA PNW CEO & Executive Director. “These efforts will not only grow tennis but will foster a healthier and active community. We would be proud to support and contribute to the Together Spokane Initiative.”
The Together Spokane plan says the USTA would provide the capital to build the facility and that Spokane students would have access. The facility could be used for community groups and programs as well.
