DEER PARK, Wash. — A wanted man armed with an axe was arrested after a standoff with Spokane County SWAT.
On February 17, at approximately 9:20 a.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported argument about three miles west of Deer Park near the intersection of West Antler Road and North Spotted Road.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department, 66-year-old Lenard W. Zickefoose was reportedly in crisis, becoming increasingly violent and armed with a large axe.
SCSO said, a family member confirmed Zickefoose was inside his motorhome on the property but was uncooperative and refused to surrender.
After several hours of failed negations, a search warrant was obtained, and chemical irritants, less-lethal options, and a K9 were used in an effort to force him out.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., SWAT team members safely took Zickefoose into custody and recovered the axe.
Zickefoose was provided medical attention before being transported to Spokane County Jail, where he was booked under a U.S. Marshals Hold.
The incident, which involved numerous law enforcement units, was resolved safely, with no injuries reported.
Deputies also discovered that Zickefoose had damaged a neighbor’s door by striking it with the axe during an argument, though the neighbor declined to press charges.
