4 News Now is excited to share that Matt Gray is joining Good Morning Northwest as a full-time meteorologist.
Matt joined the 4 News Now team in 2021 as a weekend meteorologist and weather reporter. In that time, he’s not only forecasted the weather, but he’s also a master of explaining the science behind it.
Matt also launched the popular email newsletter The Brainstorm, where he dives into weather issues (often with the help of his family pets).
“Matt makes people smarter about the weather,” said 4 News Now News Director Melissa Luck. “He cares so much about informing people about how the weather impacts their lives, while also making sure to explain what’s happening and why.”
In his new role, Matt will join Robyn Nance and Natalie Grant on Good Morning Northwest and KXLY+. He takes over for long-time weather forecaster Mark Peterson, who is retiring from daily news but will continue to lead Extreme Team projects for 4 News Now.
“While I transition to making memories and continuing the 4 News Now Extreme Team, I am excited for Matt to take over the morning weather as you’ll find him welcoming and smarter than myself,” Mark Peterson said, as he transitions to his next role at 4 News Now.
“I’m excited to get started on this new chapter in my career on Good Morning Northwest and help people get ready for their day each morning,” Matt said. “The Inland Northwest feels like home, and I’m here to stay a while.”
Matt will continue to work closely with chief meteorologist Kris Crocker as they deliver timely forecasts and explanations on tv, streaming and digital platforms.
“Our viewers have come to rely on Matt’s brilliant forecasting, and we’ve all learned so much from his in-depth explanations of weather phenomena on the BrainStorm,” Kris Crocker said. “Now, as he joins the Good Morning Northwest team, they’ll also get to see what a genuinely funny and kind person he is. He’s the perfect addition to the morning crew!”
Matt is a Florida native who studied meteorology at Florida State University. He’s worked in newsrooms in Florida and Montana before landing in Spokane.
“Matt has some big shoes to fill. People have loved having Mark help start their day for years,” said Robyn Nance. “While I am sad to lose Mark to retirement, I am equally excited to welcome Matt to GMNW. He is a scientist who knows what our viewers need to be informed and safe. Plus, he has a funny, quirky personality that everyone will get to see and enjoy.”
Matt’s first day in the new role is March 3.
