SPOKANE, Wash. — February is Black History Month, a time to honor the achievements and struggles of African Americans across the United States.
In Spokane, the Carl Maxey Center is leading efforts to recognize and support the Black community year-round.
This Saturday, the center is hosting the Sandy Williams Annual Black Business Expo at the MLK Center.
The event provides an opportunity for community members to connect with Black-owned businesses and organizations in the region. Organizers encourage attendance, particularly from those new to the area and looking for community resources.
“I want people to walk away with a sense that the community is beginning to re-establish itself within itself, that businesses are really starting to grow, and that there’s opportunity for others,” said Amos Atkinson Jr., SPRN program specialist.
The Carl Maxey Center has long been a pillar in Spokane’s Black community, honoring the perseverance and activism of leaders past and present. Atkinson said Black History Month is a time to reflect on those contributions, from the early pioneers who built businesses and churches to the civil rights leaders who left a lasting impact.
“So it’s important that we celebrate Black history so people can understand our heritage, where we’re going, and how we can get there as one,” he said.
The Black Business Expo runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Limited vendor spots are still available for those looking to showcase products or services. More details on attending can be found at the Carl Maxey Center website.
