SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women’s basketball hosted their annual pink game tonight, supporting breast cancer research and honoring survivors.
Among those survivors is Zags head coach Lisa Fortier, who has battled cancer throughout this season.
She’s coached the Bulldogs along the way to an impressive 19-8 record, now 14-2 in conference play after their 69-57 win over the LMU Lions.
The Zags won through out-rebounding the Lions 51-27, and their bench outscoring LMU 30-2.
Yvonne Ejim paced the Zags with 16 points and six rebounds, Esther Little great on the glass with 11 boards.
Along with the game itself, the Community Cancer Fund and Play4Kay Foundation donated a $50,000 check to the Multicare Inland Northwest Foundation, a surprise video tribute from all the WCC coaches, and all the Zags players and coaches helped sign an “I AM” poster in honor of coach Fortier.
She spoke with us postgame on the outpouring of support for her and her team, and what extra this game meant to her this year.
“I don’t know what that emotion comes from, it’s just that, it’s humbling when people you don’t know all that well care about you,” Fortier said. “And pray for you, and take time out of their day to think about you or to do a video for you, or to even just sign that “I am” thing and put your name on there, I know that the people who come here love us, they love our team, but it’s not like they’re my inner circle. So, it just feels like, it feels very overwhelming.”
The zags now boast a 13-game winning streak, and they test that this Thursday at home against the Saint Mary’s Gaels.
