WALLACE, Idaho — More than a thousand people are expected to brave the cold for the 7th annual Extreme SkiJor this weekend.
“I’m going to tell you: it’s a blast,” said Joe McCauley, a Wallace resident.
The city of Wallace sprayed water on the course so it will freeze over in time for skiers and snowboarders to fly over the hill.
In traditional SkiJoring, horse pull skiers or snowboarders to pick up speed. At Wallace, they use ATVs instead.
“It’s such a unique, cool event,” said Sarah White with Ski Wallace. “I like it all.”
Even though McCauley can’t shred like he used to, he has been looking forward to this event for a while.
“Wallace is a small town, there’s not a lot going on most of the time so something like this happens, come on downtown and enjoy it,” McCauley said.
White has been putting on all seven Extreme SkiJor events in Wallace. The event costs around $25,000 to put on but brings money to local restaurants, hotels and ski slopes.
“Our goal at Ski Wallace is to bring business to Wallace during the winter,” White said. “This is a really good event to show people Wallace is really fun town. We have a lot of snow, we have good ski hills.
Extreme SkiJor is a three day event with $8,000 in prizes set aside for contestants. It is completely free to watch.
The first event, the Rail Jam, begins Friday at 7 p.m.
