SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit is helping boaters get ready for the upcoming summer.
The office is offering free Washington State Boater Education Classes to help ensure that everyone is prepared to hit the water safely.
Since January 1, 2014, all boaters born after January 1, 1955, must have a Boater Education Card to operate any vessel with 15 or more horsepower.
This law applies to residents of Washington State who operate boats on Washington’s waterways. The card is proof that a boater has successfully completed an approved safety course.
Classes are scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Training Center, located at 13033 W. SR 902, Spokane, WA 99224. Upcoming class dates include:
April 12, 2025May 10, 2025June 7, 2025June 21, 2025July 12, 2025August 9, 2025September 13, 2025

What Is the Boater Education Card?
The Boater Education Card is a certification that shows the holder has completed a boating safety course. This card is required for operating a vessel in Washington State, ensuring safe practices on the water.
Exemptions to Education Requirement
Not everyone is required to take the course. Exemptions include:
Vessels with an engine under 15 horsepower.Individuals born before January 1, 1955.Those with a valid U.S. Coast Guard Marine Operator’s License.
Important Reminder: Carry the Card
For those required to have the card, it must be carried on board the vessel and made available for inspection by enforcement officers.
Failing to carry the Washington Boater Card when required may result in a fine of $99.
