SPOKANE, Wash. — A legendary Spokane radio duo is celebrating 30 years on the air on Thursday.
Jay Daniels and Kevin James have rocked Spokane’s airwaves since 1995.
They host Coyote Country’s Jay and Kevin Show.
Even after three decades, the team is still living the dream.
“Nationwide, there’s probably only a handful of shows that have lasted as long as we have,” said Jay. “And we know that we’re extremely fortunate.”
Every morning, Jay and Kevin sit in a 12 foot by 12 foot recording studio, providing the community with legendary prank calls, remarkable charity work and a smile for radio listeners on the way to work.
The duo said a lot has changed over their 30 decades on air.
“We used to get to do crazy stuff, and now, you get it halfway out of your mouth and they’re like ‘I don’t know how legal is going to feel about that idea,'” Kevin laughed.
One idea was a contest where their radio colleagues tried to get from one part of Spokane back to the radio station. The catch: they could only be in a single car for two minutes at a time.
Some hitchhiked with fans. Jay and Kevin had an actor to pick up one colleague, Reggie, and act “crazy” in the car.
Reggie, unaware of the joke.
“In his car he had a shovel and a blowup doll. So, Reggie was losing his mind, so as they were driving, Reggie jumped out of the car, while it was moving” Kevin and James laughed. “And we wonder why they won’t let us do that anymore.”
These radio stars have laughed and cried together, growing up and sharing their lives with the audience.
“They’ve listened to our families grow up on the air. All the stuff we go through, losing parents… I went through a divorce on the air, which was difficult, but also super helpful to have the audience,” Kevin said.
Jay and Kevin said their success wouldn’t exist without the community who welcomed them into their cars every morning.
“They got us through a million bad mornings. If they think we supported them, and got them through, if they only knew how much we got out of it. It’s a two-way street,” Jay said.
Tune into their morning show Wednesday, where they’ll ring in 30 years together in a memorable fashion. Several special guests are exepected to join in on the celebration.
The Jay and Kevin Show is on 99.9 Coyote Country from 6:00 am through 10:00 am.
