SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A couple that survived the 2023 Oregon Road Fire is still living in an RV, due to troubles with their mortgage company.
Sheryl Green and her husband lost their nearly 4,000 square foot home in the Oregon Road Fire, which tore through Spokane County and destroyed over 100 homes.
Today, she and her husband are still confined to living in their RV.
“This has taken a huge toll on my mental health, PTSD, it’s just triggered everything. It keeps going,” Green said.
Green and her husband began their rebuild this past fall. They were able to get the basic structure of the house built, but construction recently came to a halt.
She said her mortgage company won’t release anymore funds until her insurance says a certain percentage of the rebuild is complete.
“They keep telling me things like, when you’re 95% done with your build, contact us and we’ll release the rest of the money. So, who is supposed to pay to get it to 95%? I’m supposed to pull $400,000 out of my bank to pay for the house,” Green said.
There are still a number of things left to complete on the house, including finishing the floors, putting up walls and installing insulation.
“I am not good. I am really struggling this year. It’s a struggle. I won’t lie, I cried looking at another winter,” Green said. “I want my kitchen. I want to be able to walk through my home, sit on a couch, kick my feet up and walk into a regular room and not have to crawl across the bed, even just to try to make the bed.”
Green and her husband don’t know if or when their new home will be ready. So, until then, they stay on the outside looking in.
“We’ve come this far, this stupid fire, the mortgage company and the insurance company are not going to beat us,” she said.
