SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane City Council voted to pass a resolution supporting Spokane’s refugee and immigrant communities on Monday night.
The passed resolution supports the enforcing of the 2019 Keep Washington Working Act, which limits local law enforcement’s involvement in federal immigration cases.
The resolution passed 5-2, with councilmembers Cathcart and Bingle voting against.
Dozens of community members attended the meeting and 40 signed up to voice their objections or support for the resolution during the public comment period.
At one point, the city council room reached capacity and a fire marshal was called to ensure the room was safe enough to continue the meeting.
The resolution also calls for the city to explore ways to fund legal services for immigrants and refugees living in the city.
