SPOKANE, Wash. – For the eleventh time in a row, it’s the Gonzaga Bulldogs on top.
The Zag women’s basketball team roared back with a strong fourth quarter and overtime performance to beat the Washington State Cougars 73-69 in overtime in a game that started with a dismal first half of neither team shooting above 30% from the field.
Yvonne Ejim, who just broke the all-time Gonzaga scoring record, struggled early, only managing a 1-10 mark at halftime.
She and Bree Salenbien turned up the second half, finishing with a combined 30 points, 27 rebounds, and an eye-popping 12 of those rebounds on offense.
Tara Wallnack was solid per usual for WSU, dropping 18 points (leading all players tonight), plus five blocks.
The Cougs snapped a three-game win streak and fell in both matchups to the Zags, and this is the second of the last three meetings to need an extra period.
Wazzu next returns to Pullman to host the LMU Lions this Thursday at 6:00 p.m., and Gonzaga tries for 12 consecutive wins when they travel to Corvallis to take on Oregon State (the last team who beat the Zags) also on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
