KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — Multiple schools in Kootenai County were under alert Tuesday morning while police investigated possible threats made by a Venture Academy student.
According to the Coeur d’Alene School District, Venture Academy administrators were made aware of the threats around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Another student came forward and reported the information to the administration. The district said the student possibly made threats to other schools in the area as well.
At around 10:10 a.m., Venture Academy was placed on a safety hold while school administrators and law enforcement looked for the student who made the threats. Lakeland School District put its schools under a safety hold around 9:40 a.m. while law enforcement was in the area.
A safety hold means students can move around inside the buildings and attend classes but are not allowed to leave the building.
When the student arrived at Venture Academy, they were approached by law enforcement and taken into custody without incident. The Coeur d’Alene School District said the student was searched and did not have a weapon on them.
Once the student was taken into custody, safety holds were lifted for both the Coeur d’Alene and Lakeland School Districts.
The Coeur d’Alene School District said it is important to report all threats or suspicious activity, even if it seems like a joke. Students who make threats, even if they are not serious threats, could face disciplinary action or be charged with a crime.
