SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A mother made her first appearance in court Monday afternoon after deputies said her two-year-old son got ahold of a spoon used for fentanyl.
According to court documents, deputies were called to a hotel in the area of Argonne and I-90 for reports of an infant overdose Saturday just before 11 a.m.
When a deputy arrived, he reported seeing Micala Cameron inside one of the hotel rooms, holding a toddler who looked to be lethargic and unresponsive.
According to an affidavit of facts, the deputy also saw a clear pipe with residue and a spoon on the ground, that also had residue. Cameron told the deputy the little boy had gotten ahold of the spoon because it was left out.
Deputies said Cameron initially lied about her identity, then later confirmed her real name.
Cameron told deputies she saw her son holding the spoon she uses for fentanyl, and that she gave him two doses of Naloxone (NARCAN).
While investigating at the hotel room, one of the deputies began having trouble breathing. He was taken to a hospital for potential fentanyl exposure.
Cameron was arrested for child endangerment with a controlled substance and providing false or misleading statements to a public servant.
Superior County Court Commissioner Eugene Cruz maintained bond for Cameron at $50,000 after the toddler’s father, through a victim’s advocate, told the court that Cameron had been a good mother prior to getting involved in substance abuse.
