MOSCOW, Idaho — The University of Idaho (U of I) will welcome Northwest artist, Gareth Curtiss, to sculpt a statue of its mascot, Joe Vandal.
From February 3 through 7, Curtiss will craft the mascot using clay, and eventually be unveiled as a full-scale bronze statue.
Students, U of I staff, alumni and the community are invited to watch Joe Vandal form each day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A community open house on the statue will be held on February 3 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the ICCU Arena Alumni Club. “The Art of Creating Bronze Sculpture” lecture will be held on February 6 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in TLC 040.
“I am delighted to have been selected to create the statue of Joe Vandal and am looking forward to working with the Vandal community on this great project,” Curtiss said. “Together, we will be making a character already larger than life, much, much larger.”
U of I plans to display the bronze statue near the Kibbie Dome once it is completed.
