SPOKANE, Wash. — A teenager was arrested on Spokane’s South Hill for trying to steal from a store and assaulting a shopper, according to Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
On January 27 around 8 p.m., deputies responded to a report about a person with a weapon at a store near 57th Avenue and Regal Street.
When they arrived, Spokane Police Department had already detained the 15-year-old suspect.
SCSO learned an employee of the store had approached the teen who had a large bag of suspected stolen items.
A nearby shopper encouraged the teen to drop the bag and leave. The teen then punched the shopper in the face, prompting a struggle between the two.
The shopper and the teen dropped to the ground and the teen grabbed a packaged knife out of the bag of stolen items.
The store employee grabbed the knife away from the teen, but the struggle continued.
The teen headbutted, scratched and spit on the shopper.
Eventually, police arrived and arrested the teen. He was booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center for first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and felony harassment.
SCSO said the bag of items the teen attempted to steal from the store was worth roughly $530.
The shopper sustained minor injuries but declined medical attention at the scene.
