SPOKANE, Wash. — The family of a Spokane teen killed in a shooting on Saturday is mourning their loved one and hoping for answers.
13-year-old Gavin Loper was an eighth grader at Peperzak Middle School. His mother, Renee Rogers, said Gavin was a good kid who ‘loved everybody.’
“He was a sweet boy, and he deserved much more than this,” she said. “This cost me something irreplaceable.”
Renee said Gavin was playing video games at his father’s house when someone pulled up in a car behind the house and shot a gun through the backdoor.
Gavin’s older brother, Jordan Loper, was at the house during the shooting.
“At first, when I woke up, I just thought everybody was joking, and then I just started seeing people running and screaming and crying,” he said.
Jordan said when he understood what was happening he ran to his brother and held him.
“Stay with me,” he said to Gavin.
Police responded to the home around 2:40 a.m. on Saturday and transported Gavin to the hospital. Despite efforts to save his life, he died about an hour later.
“They still won’t let me see him. His body is a crime scene,” said Renee.
As of Sunday evening, Spokane Police Department has not released much information about the shooting, and is still searching for the shooter.
Renee said the house where Gavin was shot has security cameras, which she hopes will help lead police to those responsible.
“No punishment handed out could ever give me any closure at all,” she said.
As the family continues to mourn their loss, Renee hopes Gavin hears her message.
“I love you my sweet, beautiful boy. I’ll forever carry you in my heart. My baby, you’ll always be,” she said.
SPD did not answer messages from 4 News Now to gather additional information.
A GoFundMe has been started to collect donations to help Gavin’s family cover the costs of a funeral service.
