SPOKANE, Wash. — Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Spokane on Monday to commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The annual MLK Day Unity Rally was held in the Spokane Convention Center and hosted by the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.
Songs and words of inspiration were shared in memory of the Civil Rights leader, marking how his message of racial equality and love still rings true today.
The event also featured a video paying tribute to co-founder of the march, the late Reverend Happy Watkins. He delivered Dr. King’s iconic ‘I Have a Dream’ speech every year.
After the rally, people braved the cold and marched through downtown, holding signs aligned with Dr. King’s vision of social justice.
“We just want to show our community that this is what we stand for. This is what we represent. And we’re excited to be here. This is bringing out the love and showing that love does truly draw out the darkness,” march attendee, Lakeisha Davis said.
Many attendees expressed how important events like the march and rally are in educating future generations.
“We very much remember the Civil Rights movement in the 60 and marched then, and it’s important to be here with our kids, and especially with our grandchildren, so that we can pass those values on to the next generation,” march participant, Nan Smith said.
