SPOKANE, Wash. — If you enjoy reading books with a hot cup of coffee or maybe even a glass of wine, a new place in downtown Spokane might become your favorite hangout spot.
The grand opening of Jupiter’s Eye Book Cafe was Friday, bringing something people have been looking for downtown.
“We specialize in mystery, science fiction, fantasy, horror of all genres and we’re just a cozy little spot downtown,” said owner Morgan Lynch.
On Friday, people were able to peruse the book selection, enjoy a cup of tea and some warmth by the fire.
“It’s going to be a great place for people to hang out and visit,” said Pia Hallenberg, who stopped by the cafe on her break from work. “I know she said they’re open until eight. There’s a segment of us who are maybe a little too old to go to the dance clubs or whatever, but we still like to hang out and have a glass of wine. I think this is going to be great.”
In November, 4 News Now spoke with the local developers who invested in the Warton Building. This is what they envisioned. They thought bringing more people to the area could make downtown more vibrant, and therefore safer.
For Lynch, she’s happy to be a part of that.
“This building was built in 1901 and was originally this ground floor,” Lynch said. “It was the Spokane Paper Company and there’s something really lovely about 100 years later selling books, paper goods in this place. It’s full circle for that.”
This is her dream come true.
“I’m Spokane born and bred,” said Lynch. “I love this town and I’m just really excited to be part of it and leave my mark in it and kind of find kindred spirits who also are looking for this little cozy spot.”
In addition to coffee and tea, Jupiter’s Eye also has a selection of beer and wine for folks looking to unwind a little more.
“I love it every time someone sees the value in the neighborhood because we’re not bad at all,” Hallenberg said.
Jupiter’s Eye is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and until 3 p.m. on Sunday. The cafe is located on 1st Avenue between Stevens and Washington.
