SEATTLE, Wash. — Attorney General Bob Ferguson has filed a lawsuit against T-Mobile, accusing the company of failing to secure the personal data of over 2 million Washingtonians, leading to a massive data breach.
The breach, which exposed sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, names, and addresses, resulted from T-Mobile’s failure to address known cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
“This significant data breach was entirely avoidable,” said Ferguson. “T-Mobile had years to fix key vulnerabilities in its cybersecurity systems — and it failed.”
The lawsuit, filed in King County Superior Court, claims T-Mobile misled consumers about its data protection efforts and did not properly notify affected individuals about the breach, downplaying its severity.
The breach occurred in 2021 and affected over 79 million consumers nationwide.
Ferguson asserts that T-Mobile’s negligence violated Washington’s Consumer Protection Act and seeks civil penalties, restitution, and improvements to the company’s cybersecurity practices.
