SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane City Council approved on Monday night a half million-dollar settlement to a woman whose fiance was shot by police in 2022.
The vote passed 5-2, with councilmembers Michael Cathcart and Jonathan Bingle voting against.
In September 2022, Spokane Police Officers went to the home of 41-year-old Robert Bradley to serve an order for him to surrender his firearms and a order of protection to stay away from a neighbor.
Bradley was shot and killed during the encounter with police, prompting a 19-month investigation by Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and Washington State Patrol.
Investigators found one of the bullets fired by SPD went directly into the barrel of Bradley’s pistol, which investigators said proved Bradley was pointing a gun at officers.
After the investigation’s results were released, Bradley’s finace, Sarah McLaughlin, filed a wrongful death suit, with her attorney claiming that officers shot Bradly within three seconds of announcing their presence.
A mediation was held December 2 after which, McLaughlin agreed to dismiss all of her claims in exchange for $500,000.
