SPOKANE, Wash. — With the presents unwrapped and the new year underway, it’s time to clean up the remnants of the holiday season. The City of Spokane is offering several options to help residents recycle Christmas trees and properly dispose of holiday waste.
Recycling Guidelines
Many holiday items can be recycled, including wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, and wrapping paper rolls. However, certain items like gift bags with handles and old Christmas lights are considered “tanglers” and should be placed in the garbage. Other non-recyclable items include Styrofoam, plastic bags, plastic wrap, gift bags, and tissue paper, all of which should go in the brown garbage carts.
When in doubt about an item’s recyclability, Kirstin Davis, Communications Manager for the City of Spokane, advises, “Just put it in the trash to be safe.”
Christmas Tree Disposal
For those with natural Christmas trees, curbside pickup is currently available through January 10 on normal collection days. “If [the tree] is six feet or over, we just ask that you cut that in half so that we can manage that a little bit better,” Davis said.
You can also drop off your trees at the following locations:
Waste to Energy Facility: 2900 S. Geiger Blvd. Open daily, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.Spokane Valley Transfer Station: 3941 N. Sullivan Road.
