GRANT COUNTY, Wash. — Grant County Sheriff’s Deputies are warning the public about a virtual kidnapping scam involving text messages or social media direct messages that include violent images.
According to GCSO, the scam typically features extortion attempts, often including a loved one’s voice or screams.
Graphic images, such as a dead body, are included to scare the victim into believing their family member is at risk, with the implication that payment is required to prevent further harm.
Authorities stress that this is a scam and urge people not to send money.
To avoid falling victim, look for the following indicators:
Incoming calls may come from area codes such as (787), (939), and (856), often from Puerto Rico.Calls will not come from the alleged victim’s phone. The caller will try to keep you on the phone and prevent you from contacting the victim.Ransom demands are made via wire transfer.
If you receive such a call, try to:
Slow the situation down and ask to speak to the victim directly. If the caller refuses, ask for details about the victim or their vehicle.Listen carefully for signs the victim’s voice may be faked using artificial intelligence.Attempt to contact the victim through other means, such as phone or social media. While staying on the line, try calling the victim from another phone. To buy time, repeat the ransom demand or say you need more time to gather the money.Stay calm and do not argue with the caller.Ask the caller to allow the victim to call back from their own phone.Contact local authorities as soon as possible.
