SPOKANE, Wash. — Leaving an abusive relationship can be difficult, and it is often the most dangerous time for survivors.
Jeanette Hauck, CEO of YWCA Spokane, said, “When they first leave an abusive situation, we know that is when it is most dangerous.”
The YWCA aims to help people escape these dangerous situations. For many, the first step is calling the 24-hour helpline.
“Our skilled and trained advocates can walk them through the process of immediate safety planning,” Hauck said.
YWCA Spokane provides safe shelter, long-term housing services, legal support, advocacy, and mental health therapy.
“These funds will provide essential services for survivors of domestic violence,” Hauck said, referring to the money raised during the YWCA fundraiser.
She added that these services are needed more than ever.
“Maybe families felt like they could live in their car or perhaps camp, but this is not the time of year where individuals can do that,” Hauck said. “So, we see a big increase in the need for safe shelter.”
Sponsors and donors have agreed to match up to $100,000 in donations. So far, YWCA has raised almost $50,000, reaching halfway to its goal.
