SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A suspected Jeep thief is in serious condition after being shot by the vehicle owner in Spokane County Friday evening.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, the Jeep owner called deputies around 8:40 p.m. from a home near West Charles Road and North Dover Road saying his vehicle was stolen. The caller added he was armed and trying to follow the suspect in another vehicle.
Shortly after the first call, a call came in reporting gunshots in the area of West Four Mound Road. Around that time, the owner of the Jeep called and said he shot at the theft suspect who abandoned the Jeep in the ditch near West Four Mound Road. The owner of the Jeep said there was blood in the vehicle after the suspect fled on foot.
A third caller reported an unknown man was bleeding and banging on the front door of a home in the same area.
Sheriff’s Office deputies showed up to the different locations, provided medical aid to the suspect and detained him. The suspect was transported to the hospital for potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds.
SCSO said the suspect was last known to be in serious but stable condition. Since the suspect has not been formally charged, his name has not yet been released.
The owner of the Jeep was detained and released after speaking with investigators.
At the different scenes, detectives seized a handgun and two vehicles as well as interviewed witnesses.
The investigation is still ongoing.
