A new law in Washington state will create greater consequences for drivers who cause the death or injury of a vulnerable road user.
According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC), a vulnerable road user includes pedestrians, cyclists and people using personal mobility devices such as wheelchairs.
This law, which goes into effect January 1, will increase penalties for negligent drivers who injure or kill people on the road.
Under the new law, if a negligent driver causes the death of a vulnerable road user, they could face a fine of $5,000, up to 364 days in jail and suspension of driving privileges for 90 days. If a negligent driver injures a vulnerable road user, they could face a $5,000 fine, suspension of driving privileges for 90 days, traffic school and up to 100 hours of community service.
A negligent driver is defined as anyone who does not take ordinary care when behind the wheel which endangers another person.
WTSC said this law aims to reduce injuries and deaths from vehicle versus pedestrian crashes.
“This law is one part of Washington’s ongoing efforts to make our roads safer for everyone. By focusing on protecting our most vulnerable road users, we’re sending a clear message that when you’re the biggest and the fastest, you need to be the safest, too,” said WTSC director Shelly Baldwin. “Everyone has a right to safe passage on our roads, whether they’re in a car, on a bike, or on foot.”
