SPOKANE, Wash. — On the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is Giving Tuesday, a global day of generosity.
If you are looking for local organizations to support this holiday season, Toys for Tots is a non-profit that’s in need of your help.
Toys for Tots Spokane began its toy distribution on Monday and expects to give Christmas gifts to nearly 15,000 kids this year.
“This is our way of giving back to our community. Everything that’s donated in Spokane stays in Spokane. It doesn’t go anywhere else, and everything that doesn’t get used this year will be used next year. So, all those children will wake up in the morning and Santa will have come,” said Kari Sobisky of Toys for Tots Spokane.
With so much need in the community, the organization is still asking for donations.
“We are desperately in need for books of all ages, coloring books, toys for ages zero to two and toys for ages 10 to 12, and both of those are boys and girls,” said Sobisky.
You can donate toys at any local fire station or at Toys for Tots’ Warehouse which is located at the Northtown Mall in the old Macy’s space.
For many families, the toy drive makes a big difference.
“My husband just had knee surgery, so it helps us a lot because we are a little short on cash and we do want our daughters to have a good christmas,” said Spokane resident, Judy Hegwer.
Meals on Wheels is also asking the community to help provide meals to seniors this winter.
“$5 feeds a senior. so you can’t really get that deal anywhere else. That’s a fantastic deal, but really it’s about helping us just give hope to those who might struggle,” said Executive Director, Owen Esperas.
Meals on Wheels can also always use volunteers to help deliver the meals.
Local nonprofit, Our Place, is also celebrating Giving Tuesday to help fulfill their mission of community outreach.
The organization provides useful services like a food center, bus passes, laundry center, and personal hygiene, clothing and home item donations.
“We have that old adage, ‘Pay your rent first, and then we can help with everything else,’ like assist you with food and clothing and hygiene items and household necessities and a laundry center if you don’t have laundry at your apartment,” said Tracie Swanson, Executive Director of Our Place.
