MOUNT SPOKANE, Wash. — It might have been a little foggy Friday morning, but that didn’t stop skiers from coming out to Mount Spokane’s opening day one week earlier than expected.
“I have been waiting for this for months,” said skier Kimberly Moran.
According to Mount Spokane, this ski season is already kicking off with more snow than it had throughout almost all of last season.
“We have coverage everywhere and the entire mountain is up,” said Jim Van Loben Sals, the general manager of Mount Spokane. “Last year, we only opened a third of the mountain at this point in time.”
For many, Mount Spokane’s close proximity to the city makes it convenient, but its the vibes of those on the mountain that make it special.
“This mountain is some of the greatest people I know honestly, and can’t really beat the people, the snow, the runs that they have,” said snowboarder Brady Roberts.
Mount Spokane is a nonprofit ski mountain. It says this plays into their goal of being our a community centered mountain.
“Knowing that’s kind of true to our core mission, it really brings us a lot of pride,” Van Loben Sals said.
The mountain reported having 23 inches of snow at the base and 42 inches at the summit on Friday. For skiers, it is these great conditions that makes them optimistic for the rest of the winter.
“This is the way a winter season should start,” skier Jason Stratton said. “This is going to be a long winter and we love that.”
In total, around 1,500 skiers were anticipated to show up on opening day. The slopes will also be open for the rest of the weekend between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day.
