SPOKANE, Wash. — Planning to celebrate the holidays often includes purchasing gifts and specialty foods, but one Spokane woman is helping others save this holiday season.
According to Kumiko Love, also known as ‘The Budget Mom,’ stretching your dollar this season all starts with planning exactly how much money you have to spend.
“Having that dedicated spending plan is often the tool that we can use in the moment to hold ourselves accountable,” she said.
Love said going into Black Friday or Cyber Monday with a plan, as opposed to just buying something because it’s on sale, is key.
“Remember, you’re not really saving money if you weren’t planing on buying it anyways, you’re actually spending money,” she said.
Another way Love suggests saving money while still celebrating, is focusing more on holiday experiences, rather than material items.
“Meaningful gifts, home-baked goods, DIY handmade goods or a homemade candle… those are the types of things that bring lasting value and joy in the long term, rather than just excessively buying for the short-term,” she said.
She also said it’s important just to try to enjoy your holiday season and not compare yourself to anyone else.
