SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A new roundabout in Spokane Valley, originally built as a traffic improvement project, has left neighbors feeling unsafe.
The roundabout at 16th Avenue and Bowdish Road was constructed in September, with the goal of relieving accidents caused by left turns at the intersection.
People in the area said, despite the new roundabout, the road is still dangerous for cars and pedestrians.
“I feel like with the roundabout nobody stops, nobody knows the rules, the roundabout isn’t big enough for people to slow down,” said Alla Kazakov, who lives near the roundabout.
The speed limit for the roundabout is 15 mph, but people living nearby said cars rarely slow down.
“They are going over 35 miles an hour,” said neighbor Kara Westby.
Kazakov said car accidents have become a regular occurance.
“There’s accidents about every other day. We used to go out and see if people need help, but not it’s just become a usual thing,” she said.
People have also complained the roundabout is dangerous for those trying to cross the street.
“It’s so dark you can’t even see, and everyone is going so fast. Somebody could get hit,” said Westby.
They city put up extra signage and curbs to slow traffic, but Westby still thinks something needs to change.
“They need to make it bigger or find another solution, because this isn’t it,” she said.
