SPOKANE, Wash. — If you’re flying out of town for the holidays, budget some extra time for long lines and waits at the airport.
According to Spokane International Airport (GEG), nearly 140,000 passengers are expected to come through the airport between November 22 and December 1. They expect the most travelers between 5 a.m. – 7 a.m. each day leading up to Thanksgiving.
“2023 was a record-breaking year for Spokane International Airport, and after sustained levels of growth throughout 2024, we’re expecting this Thanksgiving to be one of the busiest yet, which is why we are recommending passengers arrive at least two hours before their flights board to give themselves enough time to park, check-in, navigate through security and prepare for boarding at the gate,” said Ezra Eckhardt, Spokane Airport Board Chair.
Roberto Ortiz works at GEG and said it’s also important to plan ahead for a smooth pick-up after your flight.
“I would advise definitely scheduling a time when you want to pick someone up and make sure they’re communicating at all times, because it’s going to be hard to part at one spot and stay in one spot,” he said.
Ortiz said sometimes the airport can be an overwhelming experience, but the staff is there to help.
“Find one of the people with the yellow vest, and we’ll take care of you,” he said.
Additional tips from GEG for smooth holiday travel include emptying your water bottle before the TSA checkpoint, ensuring any electronics larger than a cellphone are placed in a bin during the security screening and avoiding wrapped gifts in your carry-on luggage.
GEG also said they recommend monitoring your flight online as much as possible, since winter weather conditions can quickly change your flight details.
