SPOKANE, Wash. — Senator-elect Marcus Riccelli (D-Spokane) was elected as Washington’s Senate Majority Leader during a post-election reorganization Thursday.
Riccelli was first elected to the state legislature in 2012. He previously served as the Majority Whip from 2016 to 2022 and as the House Heath Chair for the last two years.
Riccelli served the last two years as the representative for Washington’s 3rd legislative district.
“I’m honored my colleagues have placed their confidence in me to fill this vital leadership role, particularly as a member new to the Senate,” said Riccelli after the vote. “Eastern Washington needs strong voices for growing and protecting good, living-wage jobs, increasing housing access and affordability, and improving our health care system. I am proud to be that voice and will continue to fight as the Senate Majority Floor Leader for Spokane-area values on important issues facing our entire state.”
According to the Washington State House Democrats website, he worked to pass legislation creating WSU’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, “which trains homegrown doctors to help fill the needs of our state’s rural and underserved communities.”
Riccelli is also a community relations manager for CHAS Health and serves on the board for the North Spokane YMCA.
