SPOKANE, Wash. — Starting in 2025, the City of Spokane will expand its curbside yard and food waste collection service to include winter months, responding to customer feedback and preparing for future requirements.
The service, which is optional, will run weekly from March through November and include the first full weeks of January, February, and December.
“Expanding curbside services for yard debris and food waste has been a common request, and in future years, it will be a requirement,” says Solid Waste Management Director Chris Averyt. “This provides additional service our customers have been asking for and helps everyone adjust to disposing organic waste in the right place.”
Customers can dispose of yard waste like leaves, branches, and pumpkins, as well as food scraps and food-soiled paper.
The cost for the service will be $18.01 per month, billed monthly, starting in 2025.
The 2025 monthly amount is based on the number of annual collections. Customers can add the service by going online at Spokane311.org and submitting a Yard Waste Start Service request or by calling the City at 311 inside City boundaries or if outside (509) 755-2489.
Reduce Food Waste and Put Scraps in Green Carts
In preparation for Thanksgiving, the city encourages residents to reduce food waste by planning meals carefully and using green carts for food scraps and yard waste.
Residents are urged to fill their green carts with leaves and yard waste by November 30, avoiding plastic bags, and following proper disposal rules to prevent additional charges.
For those who don’t subscribe to curbside service, clean green materials can still be dropped off at the city’s Waste to Energy facility for a minimal fee.
