NEZ PERCE COUNTY, ID — Nicholas Umphenour appeared in Nez Perce County Court for his initial appearance on charges of First-Degree Murder in the death of James Mauney from Juliaetta.
Umphenour is accused of killing Mauney while fleeing authorities after an incident in Boise.
Evidence gathered by multiple law enforcement agencies links him to the crime.

After resolving cases in Ada County, he was transported to Nez Perce County to face charges.
Judge Karen Seubert denied bond, and his arraignment is scheduled for December 12th before Judge Michelle Evans.
“Seeking the death penalty is appropriate in this case considering the defendant’s complete lack of regard for the life of Mr. Mauney. We’ll continue to fight in both this case and the co-defendant’s case to get justice for the victim,” said Prosecutor Justin Coleman.
The Nez Perce County Prosecutor’s Office thanked the agencies involved for their support.
