Spokane, Wash. – Spokane Community College is opening for its Trade Discovery Day, giving prospective students an up-close look at 15 trade programs offered at the college.
The event, held in Building 5’s gym, provides attendees a chance to explore diverse career options, apply for financial aid, and register for winter classes.
Running from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., the event is designed to engage community members interested in exploring a two-year degree in trades.
The morning will begin with attendees browsing 15 programs, allowing participants to speak with instructors, meet current students, and choose two programs to explore further.
Throughout the morning, visitors will take lab tours, engage in hands-on activities, and gain insights from both faculty and students about the career paths available.
Local organizations such as Greater Spokane Incorporated, Spokane Home Builders Association, and WorkSource are joining the event to showcase the various opportunities that trade careers can offer.
Derek Koenig, a first-year CNC Machinist Tech student, expressed how the program’s hands-on approach has been transformative.
“School has always been very difficult for me,” said Koenig. “But coming here, they’ve been very hands-on, very thorough. I’ve learned far more in the quarter I’ve been here than I did in two years working on machines and being a part of that world.”
Koenig wasn’t alone in his enthusiasm for SCC’s trade programs. Second-year student Cadence Haskins, who studies advanced hydraulics circuit design, shared her perspective on the value of the event.
“It’s intimidating being a young person and feeling like you have to make a career decision right now,” Haskins said. “This is a great option to kind of put your feet in the water and see what you might want to do.”
Instructors also highlighted the advantages of SCC’s programs, from smaller class sizes to industry-relevant curriculum.
John Norman, an instructor for the robotics and mechatronics technology program, emphasized the demand for problem-solving skills.
“If you’re looking for a good career that has challenges to it, and you get to use your mind and be creative, this is an excellent field to get into with a lot of potential for growth,” Norman said.
Trade Discovery Day aims to empower prospective students to visualize themselves in a fulfilling career while meeting industry demand for skilled workers.
