SPOKANE, Wash. — On Monday, Meals on Wheels hosted a Veterans Day event to support and thank United States veterans and their families.
Held at the Mid-City Concerns Senior Center, the event featured hot meals, live music and and good company to celebrate and express gratitude to those who have served our country.
Meals on Wheels delivers hot nutritious meals to seniors across Spokane, and one out of every three of those meals goes to a veteran or their spouse.
“They fight for our freedom and they’ve done a lot for our country. The last thing they need to do is come home and have to worry about having to battle for a meal. I think that’s the beautiful part, that here at the Mid-City Concerns Senior Center and Meals on Wheels, we want to provide that meal for them,” said Meals on Wheels Executive Director Owen Esperas.
For U.S. Army veteran, Harry Duane Galland, events like Monday’s are particularly special.
“I went into the army drafted in December of 1964 and spent two years lucky I went to Walter Reed. I didn’t go to Vietnam, but I still served my country,” he said.
Galland said he was happy to attend the event and moved by a special thank-you note from a local student.
“This note from a high school girl hits my heart. She thanked me for being a veteran and wrote a very beautiful letter to me. I’d like to thank her personally,” he said.
