SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane City Council unanimously approved a new ordinance last night that would increase protections for Spokane’s old and historic buildings.
Spokane City Councilman Paul Dillon says the demolition of Mary’s Place earlier this year was a wake-up call for the community in working to better protect these historic landmarks.
So, the city passed an ordinance known as the ‘Mary’s Place Preservation Ordinance’. Under this ordinance, structures listed on the Spokane Register of Historic Places and structures that are 50 years and older and eligible for the registry will be required to maximize preservation and reuse salvageable materials if the owner wants to demolish.
The ordinance goes into effect December 4.
