WA INITIATIVE 2117 – CARBON TAXES
WA INITIATIVE 2109 – CAPITAL GAINS TAXATION
WA INITIATIVE 2124 – LONG TERM CARE INITIATIVE
Voters are rolling in for four Washington initiatives that could significantly impact the state and the people who live there.
As of 8:36, the first run of ballots counted on election night show the following results:
Initiative 2117 – Failing
Initiative 2117 was the most high-profile issue voters faced this year, with millions of dollars spent on campaign ads and mailers.
This initiative effectively overturns Washington’s Climate Commitment Act, or the carbon-trade program.
The CCA aims to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Critics called it a hidden gas tax and said the program had not yet proven to be effective.
Supporters of the act, who oppose the initiative, said the CCA is important for Washington’s future. Opponents of the initiative also point to the millions in state funding that would be lost if the CCA is overturned.
Initiative 2109 – Failing
Initiative 2109 pertains to the capital gains tax.
A yes vote supports the repeal of the capital gains excise. A no vote keeps it in place.
Initiative 2066 – Passing
Initiative 2066 is the natural gas policies measure.
A yes vote prohibits state and local governments from restricting natural gas.
A no vote opposes laws and policies that would restrict or discourage the use of natural gas.
Initiative 2124 – Failing
Initiative 2124 relates to long-term care insurance.
It would amend current state law that established a long-term care insurance program. A yes vote allows employees and people who are self-employed to opt out of the payroll tax and out of receiving benefits under the WA Cares program.
A no vote keeps this in place and doesn’t allow people to opt out of this mandatory payroll tax.
All four initiatives are sponsored by the political action committee Let’s Go Washington.
