SPOKANE, Wash. — Dozens of volunteers came together to help clean up downtown Spokane on Wednesday morning.
The Downtown Spokane Partnership hosted its annual Fall Clean Up, which drew over 60 volunteers to clean up the downtown core and Monroe Street Corridor.
Together, the volunteers painted over graffiti and cleared out trash from Monroe viaduct.
“There’s plenty of people who take pride in this area and it’s a spot we should take pride in,” said volunteer team leader, Eduardo Castillo.
They also planted flowers to sprout this coming spring.
The clean-up effort was a win for many local businesses.
LaDarius Johnson is a barber at Black London’s in Browne’s Addition and said something as simple as spray paint can alter the perception of a business.
“When you have somebody right down the street spray-painting over somebody’s beautiful art on the side of a building, and you have so much traffic rolling through and seeing it, it sort of creates a little bit of a hindrance and sometimes paints a negative picture of the area we have,” said Johnson.
He hopes the clean-up will create a ripple effect.
“The more we can get the community together to do these outreach moments, it’ll really improve,” said Johnson.
