SPOKANE, Wash. — The family of a transgender middle school student is suing Spokane Public Schools accusing the district of not doing enough to protect their child from bullying and education loss.

According to the lawsuit filed in Spokane Superior Court, Ian Ring was a student at Salk Middle School when he was the victim of bullying in October 2021. The lawsuit says students yelled transphobic slurs at Ian and assaulted him. It also says Salk Middle School did not report the assault to law enforcement.
The lawsuit says one of the bullying students was charged with fourth-degree assault. Video of the assault was also posted on social media.
Spokane Public Schools is also accused of not providing special education services Ian was supposed to receive at the school via a 504 Plan.
The lawsuit says Ian attempted suicide following the assault and has needed therapy since.
