SPOKANE, Wash – Whether it’s because ballots are sitting on the counter under that pile of mail or people just aren’t sure yet who they’ll vote for, Spokane County voters are returning their ballots at a much slower pace than the last presidential election.
Current data from the Washington Secretary of State’s Office shows 108,276 voters have returned their ballots in Spokane County. That’s 29.95% of registered voters.
On this day in 2020, 156,469 people had returned their ballots for a turnout of 43.09%.
Still, Spokane County Auditor Vicky Dalton told 4 News Now this week she expects the total voter turnout in Spokane County to be about 80%.
In 2020, voter turnout in Spokane County was 81.82%.
As of Thursday, 19% of voters statewide have returned their ballots.
54% are using ballot dropboxes while 44% have come through the mail.
1.49% have come in through “other” methods, which could include people dropping off ballots in person at elections offices.
The Secretary of State’s Office also tracks how many ballots are challenged.
So far this election, 6,163 ballots have been challenged. 4,185 of those had signatures that did not match. 1,870 were unsigned and 58 had no signature on file.
Those unchallenged ballots make up .65% of what has been returned so far.
