SPOKANE, Wash. — The student who brought a gun to Shaw Middle School on Tuesday will be detained in a psychiatric facility, a judge ruled on Wednesday.
The 12-year-old boy was set to appear in court on October 16, but waived his presence and was not in attendance.
His family was in the courtroom when the judge ruled the boy will undergo a psychiatric evaluation by mental health professionals.
If they deem that he is not a threat to the public, he will be released to his home, but required to wear an electronic monitor.
The judge’s ruling also included removing all weapons from the boy’s home.
According to his attorney, the boy’s family said they don’t have any weapons to remove.
The gun the middle schooler brought to school is a .45 caliber pistol, but it has not been made clear where the gun came from.
The boy was arrested in a field nearby Shaw Middle School on October 15 after fleeing the building once school resource officers learned he had brought a gun to school.
Court documents released on Wednesday revealed the student showed the gun to two students and threatened to “pop” one student in the head if she told anyone about the gun.
Police said the 12-year-old told his classmate he had the gun because another student would be coming to the school, but he did not explain further.
The boy is charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a gun and bringing a gun onto school grounds.
