SPOKANE, Wash. — In an effort to get more landlords to register their properties, the city council voted to giver renters more protections.
The ordinance prohibits landlords without businesses licenses or with unregistered rental properties from raising rent or evicting tenants.
The city initially passed a registry requirement in 2023 that went into effect January 2024.
The city council says this ordinance incentivizes landlords to register, and the ordinance also streamlines the registry process.
A waiver was also added for the 15 dollar per unit fee for low-income tenants.
The ordinance was approved with a 5-2 vote.
