SPOKANE, Wash. — Some people in the Hillyard neighborhood in North Spokane are not too happy with their newest, fluffy neighbors.
Dozens of bunnies have moved into the Hillyard area, just a few blocks east of the North Town Mall.
Ray Krueger lives in Hillyard and said what started as two or three bunnies has grown to about 50 bunnies in the neighborhood.
“They are very sweet and adorable, but they are also very destructive, and I have seen so many people’s lawns that are completely destroyed because of them,” said Krueger.
The rabbits have left many yards in the neighborhood covered in patches of dead grass and rabbit droppings.
“They eat a lot. The person that lives next door tries to garden in the back and they like to eat her garden up,” said Gary Dennis who lives in Hillyard.
Dennis also said neighbors are finding dead rabbits in their yards and streets.
“There’s a lot of dead rabbits on Addison. A lot. I’ve had to pick up several of them in the yard,” he said.
Some neighbors said people have come from the surrounding areas to see the bunnies, and some have even tried to catch them in nets to take them home.
Dennis said he reached out to Spokane City Council and SCRAPS (Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service) to help solve the issue.
“There is just no jurisdiction over it, there is no code enforcement for it, nobody is taking claim to it as theirs, so there is not a lot for any of the agencies to do about it,” he said.
Councilmember Jonathan Bingle told 4 News Now that he is working to give SCRAPS the authority to take care of the rabbits, in Hillyard and around the city.
