SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane is looking to tackle the issues facing the downtown core and plans to implement a pilot program.
The Crisis Outreach, Response and Engagement (CORE) plan will be a collaboration among Spokane Police, the city, Spokane Fire, and behavioral health partners.
According to the city, the plan will have SPD deploy additional officers to the downtown precinct increasing foot and bike patrols.
CORE will also have the city increase co-deployment teams such as the Behavioral Health Unit, Behavioral Response Unit, and CARES Team.
“This new pilot is designed to ensure every member of our community feels supported and safe. This plan combines both qualitative and quantitative strategies – putting more feet on the street, enhancing coordination across teams, and using our resources in a targeted, data-driven way. I am confident this approach will allow us to respond to challenges more effectively while fostering a safer and more connected community,” said Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown.
CORE will be in effect for 30 days. It’s unclear when the city plans to begin the program.
