During commercial breaks of The View on ABC stations across the country this week, viewers will see a graphic ad which includes disturbing anti-abortion imagery.
ABC will air a disclaimer warning viewers before the ad, but there’s nothing stations can do to stop it from airing.
The disclaimer will say, “The following is a paid political advertisement, and the ABC Television Network is required to carry it by federal law. The advertisement contains scenes that may be disturbing to children. Viewer discretion is advised.”
The ad is for Constitution party candidate Randall Terry, who is on ballot for president in several states.
The images of aborted fetuses would be considered by most people to be disturbing. So, why is it airing?
FCC rules say “broadcast stations are prohibited from censoring or rejecting political ads that are paid for and sponsored by legally qualified candidates.” The no-censorship rule applies only to legally qualified candidates, not non-candidate third parties.
