COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Several schools in North Idaho will be closed on Election Day as the sites serve as polling places November 5.
According to the Coeur d’Alene School District, some of their schools plan to be polling sites so there will be no classes districtwide. Classes will resume as normal Wednesday, November 6.
Schools in the Lakeland School District will also be closed.
The Kootenai Elections Office said finding a space for polling sites has become a struggle, especially with a large turnout expected this year.
Thomas Gandy, Safety and Security Coordinator for CDA Public Schools said more and more schools are being chosen to act as polling sites.
“We’ve seen an uptick in schools being used as polling places as other traditional polling places become unavailable or decide they don’t want to be used as polling places because it’s too big of a burden,” he said.
Gandy said the school district decided to close on Election Day out of an abundance of caution for students and staff.
“In an election cycle like this, especially a general election where the voter turnout is supposed to be huge, we were just saying we can mitigate all of those concerns by not having school that day,” he said.
Post Falls, West Bonner, Lake Pend Oreille, and Kootenai school districts all appear to have normal classes on Election Day.
